MAKING A DIFFERENCE

THE STEEL WAY

Steel Sports is a social impact organization committed to creating a new standard in youth sports and coaching while forging the next generation of leaders and creating a positive experience for over 100,000 athletes and their families each year. When a kid plays for Steel Sports success comes in many forms: on the field, in the classroom, within their community, at home and in a career.

Steel Sports coaches are teachers, mentors and role models dedicating their lives to our kids. Kids who receive character and leadership development from coaches go further, achieve more and give back. At Steel Sports, we know the impact kids can have on this world, and that’s why we put KIDS FIRST.

MEETING A LEGEND

STEEL SPORTS IS BORN

After being introduced to baseball Hall of Famer and Los Angeles Dodger legend Tommy Lasorda, Steel Partners chairman Warren Lichtenstein founded Steel Sports in 2011, and the organization is headquartered in Bridgewater, New Jersey. Struck by Tommy’s gift in connecting with others and the power of positive coaching, the impetus for creating Steel Sports is the hope that by instilling Tommy’s values, we create like-minded young adults who will follow in his path.

THE LIFE & LEGACY OF TOMMY LASORDA

1927-2021

Thomas Charles Lasorda bled Dodger Blue and was perhaps baseball’s greatest ambassador. From the time he was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949, Tommy remained in the organization till the day he died, his love for the Dodgers never ceasing. He was a pitcher, scout, minor league manager and a third base coach before he got his chance to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 21 seasons, he compiled 1,599 wins with a .526 win percentage, four National League pennants and two World Series titles in 1981 and 1988. After retirement in 1996, Tommy had his No. 2 retired by the Dodgers and was inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997, and in 2000, he led Team USA to an improbable gold medal win over heavily favored Cuba. Improbable to many, but nothing was impossible to Tommy Lasorda.
